\textit{A. Pillay} and \textit{C. Steinhorn} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 295, 565--592 (1986; Zbl 0662.03023)] together with \textit{J. F. Knight} [ibid. 295, 593--605 (1986; Zbl 0662.03024)] proved that o-minimal totally ordered abelian groups coincide with totally ordered divisible abelian groups. In the present paper the authors characterize o-minimal totally ordered unital abelian groups \((G,u)\), where \(u\) is a distinguished positive element of \(G\) having the Archimedean property. They work in the equivalent framework of MV-chains, using the present reviewer's categorical equivalence \(\Gamma\) between MV-algebras (the algebras of infinite-valued Łukasiewicz logic) and unital lattice-ordered abelian groups. For an MV-chain \(A= (A,0,\neg,\oplus)\), the authors prove that \(A\) is o-minimal iff it is either finite or divisible. As another interesting result, they prove that \(A\) is weakly o-minimal iff its first-order theory \(\mathrm{Th}(A)\) has elimination of quantifiers iff the radical of \(A\) is a divisible monoid and the radical quotient of \(A\) is either finite or divisible. For background on MV-algebras see [\textit{R. L. O. Cignoli}, \textit{I. M. L. D'Ottaviano} and \textit{D. Mundici}, Algebraic foundations of many-valued reasoning. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers (2000; Zbl 0937.06009)]. For advanced topics see [\textit{D. Mundici}, Advanced Łukasiewicz calculus and MV-algebras. Berlin: Springer (2011; Zbl 1235.03002)].
