The author studies a set of four coupled, nonlinear ODEs modelling a gene regulatory network. They are regarded as two coupled subsystems, one of which undergoes a Hopf bifurcation when variables in the other subsystem are fixed, and the other of which possesses hysteretic fixed point behaviour when variables in the first subsystem are fixed. By choosing parameters so that there is a separation of timescales in the full system, conditions under which a horseshoe map -- and thus chaotic behaviour -- exist are found.
