For a Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\) one has a general natural lift to a semi-Riemannian metric \(G\) on the tangent bundle \(TM\) which generalizes the well known Sasaki metric (see e.g. [\textit{V. Oproiu}, Math. J. Toyama Univ. 22, 1--14 (1999; Zbl 0955.53039)]). The present author introduces a \textit{general natural almost product structure} \(P\) on \(TM\); the definition depends on horizontal and vertical lifts determined by a linear connection on \(M\) and a number of coefficient functions. The author gives necessary and sufficient integrability conditions for \(P\) to be a local product structure; these include the constancy of the curvature of \((M,g)\) and conditions on the coefficient functions. The author also gives necessary and sufficient conditions for \(P\) and \(G\) to be a Riemannian almost product structure. Finally the paper takes up questions of the structure on \(TM\) being almost para-Hermitian, almost para-Kähler, etc.
