Let \((M,g)\) be a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\geq 2.\) Let \(\text{Vol}_g(M)>V>0\). The Faber-Krahn profile of \((M,g)\) is given by \[ \text{FK}_g(V)=\inf_{\Omega\subset M, \text{Vol}_g(\Omega)=V}\lambda_1(\Omega), \] and the isoperimetric profile of \((M,g)\) is given by \[ I_g(V)=\inf_{\Omega\subset M,\text{Vol}_g(\Omega)=V}\text{Vol}_g(\partial\Omega), \] where \(\lambda_1(\Omega)\) is the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on \(\Omega\) with Dirichlet boundary conditions and where the infimum is taken over the smooth domains \(\Omega\subset M\). In this paper, the author gives a proof of the fact that an asymptotic expansion of the isoperimetric profile of a Riemannian manifold for small volumes gives an asymptotic expansion of the Faber-Krahn profile for the same manifold. More precisely, he proves that if \((M,g)\) is a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\geq 2,\) then \[ \text{FK}_g(V)=\mu_1\biggl({n\over{\omega_{n-1}}}V\biggr)^{-2/n}-\biggl({1\over 6}+ {\mu_1\over{3n(n+2)}}\biggr)\max_M S_g+o(1)= \text{FK}_{g_K}(V)+o(1), \] for \(V\) small, where \(\mu_1\) denotes the first eigenvalue of the Euclidean Laplacian on the unit ball with Dirichlet boundary conditions, where \(\omega_{n-1}\) is the volume of the unit sphere in \({\mathbb R}^n\), \(S_g\) denotes the scalar curvature of \((M,g)\) and where \(\max_M S_g=n(n-1)K,\) \(\text{FK}_{g_K}(V)\) being the Faber-Krahn profile of the simply-connected complete manifold \((M_K,g_K)\) with constant sectional curvature \(K\).
