The authors present a second order accurate interpolation matched interface and boundary (IMBM) method for elliptic interface problems in rectangular grids. Explicit finite difference formulas at irregular grid points are given by virtue of the level set function and reformulate it in a symmetric form. The difference scheme using IMIB method is shown to satisfy the discrete maximum principle for a certain class of problems. For a 1D problem, the authors obtain a sharp error bound for the approximate solution by a comparison function technique, while they could not get an error analysis for 2D problems with piecewise constant coefficients. Numerical examples are given to support the analytical results.
