The article deals with the conservation laws of the so called constant astigmatism equation \(z_{yy} + (1/z)_{xx} + 2 =0\). The authors explain how a hierarchy of conservation laws can be generated inductively (based on the zero curvature representation of the equation and on an expansion with respect to the spectral parameter), address the question of the minimal set of potentials which is closed under the reciprocal transformations, and discuss the functional independence of these potentials.
