The paper under review is concerned with the question of surjectivity for convolution operators on Riemannian symmetric spaces \(X=G/K\) of noncompact type (here \(K\) is maximal compact), in particular the mean value operator. The authors prove the surjectivity of this operator if \(X\) is either complex or rank one. For higher rank the result is shown to hold for points in an appropriate Weyl subchamber. The authors first formulate the Fourier and Radon transforms using the Charish-Chandra isomorphism associated with the Weyl group, as well as the spherical functions of \(X\). Then, using the Abel transform, the problem is transferred to the Euclidean space. There the authors apply certain estimates by Ehrenpreis and Hörmander to conclude surjectivity.
