In the well-known monograph on semigroups by \textit{A. H. Clifford} and \textit{G. B. Preston} (1961; Zbl 0111.03403) a theorem is proved which states that any semigroup can be embedded into a bisimple monoid. The author gives a more simple proof of that theorem as well as a new proof of the inverse version of that theorem proved first by N. Reilly: any inverse semigroup can be embedded into a bisimple inverse monoid.
