Let \(\mathcal T\) be a triangulated category with suspension functor \(\Sigma\) and with set index coproducts and suppose \(C\) is a compact object with endomorphism ring \(S\) of finite global dimension \(n\) and vanishing homomorphisms from \(C\) to \(\Sigma^i C\) for all \(i\) with \(0<|i|\leq n+1\). Then let \(\mathcal M_k\) be the full subcategory of \(\mathcal T\) formed by objects \(X\) so that \(\Hom_T(C,\Sigma^{-i}X)=0\) for all \(i\in\{1,\dots,k\}\). The main result of the paper is that the functor \(\Hom_T(C,-)\) from \(\mathcal M_n\) to the category of \(S\)-modules has a left adjoint. This left adjoint is a full embedding of the category of \(S\)-modules to the category \(\mathcal M_n\). Various properties of this left adjoint are shown and an application to cluster categories is given. The main theorem is a generalisation of an earlier result of Jørgensen.
