    The paper investigates a non-standard number system with negative base \(-\beta\) that generalizes one recently introduced by \textit{S. Ito} and \textit{T. Sadahiro} [Integers 9, No. 3, 239--259, A22 (2009; Zbl 1191.11005)]. It is defined as follows: For real \(\beta > 1\) and \(-1 < \ell \leq 0 \) let \(T : I \to I\) where \(I = \{a : \ell \leq a < \ell + 1\}\) be defined as \(T(x)= - \beta x - \lfloor - \beta x - \ell \rfloor \). For \(x \in I\) let \(d(x)\) be the infinite string of digits given by \(x_i = \lfloor - \beta T^{i-1}(x) - \ell \rfloor \) for \(i= 1,2,\dots\) This string is called the \((-\beta, \ell)\)-expansion of \(x\). Taking \(\ell = - \beta/(\beta +1)\) one recovers the number system of Ito and Sadahiro as a special case. Various results on this number system are obtained, such as a characterization of possible strings of digits and periodicity results on the string of digits. Moreover, the authors point out that some of their results contradict a result of \textit{P. Góra} [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 27, No. 5, 1583--1598 (2007; Zbl 1123.37015)].
