Let \(R\) be a 2-torsion free ring containing a Lie ideal \(L\) so that \(u\in L\) implies \(u^2\in L\). Denote by \(\lambda\) a Hochschild 2-cocycle of \(R\): \(\lambda\colon R\times R\to R\) is biadditive and satisfies \(x\lambda(y,z)-\lambda(xy,z)+\lambda(x,yz)-\lambda(x,y)z=0\) for all \(x,y,z\in R\). Call \(\lambda\) symmetric if all \(\lambda(x,y)=\lambda(y,x)\). For an additive \(F\colon R\to R\), the authors call \((F,\lambda)\) a generalized derivation of \(R\) if for all \(x,y\in R\), \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xF(y)+\lambda(x,y)\), and a generalized Jordan derivation when \(F(x^2)=F(x)x+xF(x)+\lambda(x,x)\) for all \(x\in R\). For the main results the authors assume that \((F,\lambda)\) acts like a generalized Jordan derivation on \(L\) and obtain conditions that imply that \((F,\lambda)\) acts like a generalized derivation on \(L\). Specifically, when \(R\) is a prime ring \((F,\lambda)\) acts like a generalized derivation on \(L\) if either \(L\) is not commutative or if \(L\) is commutative and \(\lambda\) is symmetric. For any 2-torsion free ring \(R\), \((F,\lambda)\) acts like a generalized derivation on \(L\) when for some \(x,y\in L\), \(xy-yx\) is not a zero divisor in \(R\).
