This book is a mathematical treatise of approximate theories for thin deformable bodies, including cables, beams, rods, webs, membranes, plates and shells. The book consists of eight chapters: Chapter 1: History of deformable body dynamics; Chapter 2: Mathematical tools for the deformation and kinematics of deformable bodies; Chapter 3: Deformation geometry, kinematics and dynamics of deformable bodies; Chapter 4: Constitutive laws and damage theory for deformable bodies; Chapter 5: Nonlinear cable dynamics; Chapter 6: Nonlinear theory and vibration of plates; Chapter 7: Nonlinear theory for webs, membranes and shells; Chapter 8: Nonlinear theory for beams and rods. At the end of each chapter, a large number of references are given for further studies. The book presents a theoretic frame to develop accurate theories of beams and rods and approximate theories of plates and shells. The book also can serve as a reference work for researchers and as a textbook for senior and postgraduate students in physics, mathematics, engineering and biophysics.
