A subset \(L\) of a matrix of indeterminates is a ladder if \(x_{ij}, x_{kl}\in L\) implies \(x_{uv}\in L\) whenever \(i\leq u \leq k\) and \(j\leq v\leq l\). A ladder \(L\) individuates a determinantal ideal \(I_t(L)\), generated by all \(t\times t\) minors of \(X\) whose entries belong to \(L\). The author studies the structure of these ladder determinantal ideals and the corresponding algebraic varieties. If \(Y\) is the variety defined by a sum of ladder determinantal ideals \(I_{t_1}(L_1)+\dots+I_{t_k}(L_k)\), then the author is able to compute a Gröbner basis for \(Y\). Using the Gröbner basis, the author proves that \(Y\) is irreducible and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, while conditions for detecting the Gorenstein property are provided. The author also shows that such varieties \(Y\) are connected, by a chain of G-liaisons, to linear varieties.
