In the nonlinear theory of isotropic elasticity, ''universal relations'' are force-deformation relations which are independent of material properties. In this note, the author further categorizes universal relations as being ''local'' or ''global'' depending upon whether they involve stress and stretch tensors, or resultant forces and moments respectively. Several examples are examined including shear superimposed on triaxial extension and extension inflation and shear of a cylinder. The paper is brief but well-written. It should be of interest to researchers working in nonlinear elasticity.
