In a previous paper [Ann. Univ. Ferrara, Nuova Ser., Sez. VII. 31, 71-89 (1985; Zbl 0598.13004)], the author has introduced the notion of unitary independence, which was used for the classification of certain classes of indecomposable finitely generated modules over valuation domains [see the author, Commun. Algebra 13, 2473-2491 (1985; Zbl 0581.13014)]. - The aim of this paper is to show that the unitary independence can be used for the investigation of finite rank torsion-free modules over valuation domains, obtaining similar results to the ones that hold for finitely generated modules.
