In this charming paper the authors study continuous representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field \(F\) in GL\((n,{\mathbb C}_\ell),\) where \({\mathbb C}_\ell\) is the completion of \(\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell.\) The focus is on such representations which do not have a model over \(\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell.\) These representations are called transcendental. Up to now, not much work has been spent to understand them. The authors outline the basic general theory of these representations and then carry out the construction of particularly interesting examples. Namely, they unveil a strategy to construct transcendental representation which are semisimple, unramified at a density one set of places of \(F\), ramified at infinitely many places and such that for a density one set of places the corresponding Frobenius elements have characteristic polynomial with coefficients in \(\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell.\) They hope that their work will lead to a better understanding of representations factoring over power-series rings over \({\mathbb Z}_\ell\) and to a better understanding of ``limits'' of representations defined over \(\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell.\)
