One says that a smooth manifold \(E\) homeomorphic to \(\mathbb R^ 4\) (i.e., an exotic \(\mathbb R^ 4\)) satisfies the DFT (De Michelis-Freedman-Taubes) condition if, roughly speaking, \(E\) contains compacts that are not subsets of the interior of any smoothly embedded 4-disk. The only known spaces having the DFT property are diffeomorphic to \(\mathbb R^4\). The author notes that any exotic \(\mathbb R^ 4\) with a proper Lipschitz function having bounded critical values satisfies the DFT-condition.
