Stability groups of series in vector spaces. (Q891467): Difference between revisions

Let \(V\) be a vector space over a division ring \(D\) and \(L\) a complete series of subspaces of \(V\) containing \(\{0\}\) and \(V\). Let \(S=\mathrm{Stab}(L)\) be the stability group of this series. In the article under review, the author studies the relationships between the subsets of left and bounded left Engel elements of \(S\) and its various canonical locally nilpotent subgroups. In particular, the author proves that for ascending series and often for descending series the set \(L(S)\) of left Engel elements and the set \(L^-(S)\) of bounded left Engel elements of \(S\) are equal to the Fitting subgroup \(\mathrm{Fitt}(S)\), as indeed are the Gruenberg radical \(\sigma(S)\) and the Baer radical \(\sigma^-(S)\) of \(S\).
