    Let R be a three-dimensional semi-infinite cylinder, i.e. \(R=\{x\in {\mathbb{R}}^ 3:\) \((x_ 1,x_ 2)\in S\), \(x_ 3>0\}\). The authors consider solutions \(u\in C^ 2(R)\) of the equation \(\sum^{3}_{j=1}(\rho (x,u,\nabla u)u_{x_ j})_{x_ j}=0\) and study the energy integral \(E(a):=\int_{R_ a}\rho | \nabla u|^ 2dv\), where \(R_ a\) is the subdomain of R in which \(x_ 3>a\geq 0.\) If (i) \(\rho\) is a positive function for which there exist \(p>1\), \(M\geq 0\) and \(K\geq 0\) such that \(0<\rho \leq M+K(\rho | \nabla u|^ 2)^{1/p},\) (ii) u is continuously differentiable up to that portion of R on which \(x_ 3>0\) and at every point on this portion, u or \(\partial u/\partial n\) is equal to zero, (iii) there exists \(N>0\) such that \(| u| <N\) throughout R, they show that an estimate \[ E(a)\leq b_ 1a^{-(p+1)/(p-1)}+b_ 2a^{-1} \] holds for \(a>0\). (The constants \(b_ 1\) and \(b_ 2\) are depending only upon N, M, K, p and the area of S).
