A numerical method is described and analyzed, which detects singular minimizers and avoids the Lavrentiev phenomenon for three-dimensional problems in nonlinear elasticity. This method extends to three dimensions the corresponding one-dimensional method of \textit{J. M. Ball} and \textit{G. Knowles} [e.g.: ibid. 51, 181-197 (1987; Zbl 0636.65064)].
