The author takes the methodological point of view that a model should exhibit structural stability in order to be capable of explaining real- world phenomena. This implies that in constructing models structural stability is to be taken into account as a prerequisite. In this sense it is a modeling instrument. These insights are applied to a model of a spatial economy. Structural stability imposes an additional structure on the equations of the model.
