The author obtains an entropy formula for a family \((\Omega_t)_{t\in[0,T)}\) of bounded open subsets of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with smooth boundary hypersurfaces evolving with normal speed \[ \beta_t=-\frac{\partial x}{\partial t}\cdot \nu, \] where \(x\) denotes the embedding map of \(\partial\Omega_t\) and \(\nu\) the normal pointing out of \(\Omega_t.\) The formula is an adaptation of Perelman's entropy formula for the Ricci flow [\textit{G. Perelman}, arXiv e-print service, Cornell University Library, Paper No. 0211159, 39 p., electronic only (2002; Zbl 1130.53001)]. In the important case of the mean curvature flow, where \(\beta_t\) is given by the mean curvature of the boundary of the subset \(\Omega_t,\) the author conjectures a Harnack-type inequality which would imply the monotonicity of the entropy. Under the assumption that the conjecture is valid, a lower local volume ratio bound for solutions of the mean curvature flow is obtained, which rules out certain eternal solutions of the mean curvature flow as rescaling limits metric, as the stationary solutions corresponding to a pair of hyperplanes or to the catenoid minimal surface, or as the translating solution corresponding to the grim reaper hypersurface.
