A method is devised for solving the Maxwell equations in the vicinity of a multipole particle, based on a geometrical construction of an unusual trajectory-adapted coordinate system. This simplifies the equations and allows the solution to be given in the form of a series that involves a new family of special functions. A discussion of self-interaction problems in classical electrodynamics is discussed.
