The paper under review proves a nontrivial generalization of the famous theorem of \textit{E. Cattani, P. Deligne} and \textit{A. Kaplan} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 8, No. 2, 483--506 (1995; Zbl 0851.14004)] on the algebraicity of the locus of Hodge classes associated to a variation of pure Hodge structure, to the setting of an (integral) admissible variation of mixed Hodge structure over a base \(S\) (being a Zariski open subset of a complex manifold \(\overline{S}\)). Their method of proof relies on an earlier difficult theorem on the zero locus of an admissible higher normal function associated to a polarizable (integral) variation of Hodge structure of negative weight, a result which hinges on the \(SL(2)\)-orbit theorem of \textit{K. Kato, C. Nakayama} and \textit{S. Usui}; J. Algebr. Geom. 17, No. 3, 401--479 (2008; Zbl 1144.14005)].
