The paper is a study of differential algebraic equations (DAEs) of the form \[ E \dot x = Ax + f, \] where \(x \in {\mathbb R}^n\) is a variable depending on the real time \(t\), \(\dot x = \frac{dx}{dt}\), \(E\) and \(A\) are \((n \times n)\)-matrices, and \(f\) is a vector. The aim of this paper is to develop a solution theory for distributional DAEs, i.e., distributions are considered as solutions \(x\) and as entries of \(E, A, f\). This framework encompasses time-varying DAEs, where jumps are allowed in the coefficients. The author introduces the notion of regularity of distributional DAEs (this is related to solvability and the uniqueness of solutions of such DAEs) and establishes sufficient and necessary conditions for regularity. Finally, an example of a distributional DAE describing an electrical circuit with a switch is considered.
