Radial basis functions are useful for the approximation of functions by interpolation in many dimensions. In order to approximate functions with singularities, the authors use quotients of radial basis function sums in this case. The primary application the authors have in mind is the design of antennas. The non-uniqueness of choosing numerator and denominator in the case of rational approximation is taken up in this approach by minimising a certain norm. This minimisation problem is solved by the computation of an eigenvalue and an eigenvector. Several numerical tests and applications are given.
