In den letzten 10 Jahren stellte sich heraus, daß die Klasse C der cotorsionsfreien abelschen Gruppen für viele Untersuchungen grundlegend ist. Eine Gruppe G ist cotorsionsfrei, sofern sie torsionsfrei, reduziert ist und keine Kopie der p-adischen ganzen Zahlen \(J_ p\) enthält. Im Sinne von Torsionstheorien wurde von S. Shelah und dem Referenten gezeigt, daß C nicht einfach coerzeugt ist - grob gesprochen ist damit C eine sehr große und komplexe Klasse ohne eine Menge von ''Bausteinen''. Kurioserweise, und das ist eines der Hauptresultate dieser Arbeit, kann man C mit etwas gröberen Mitteln aus \(2^{\aleph_ 0}\) vielen Stücken aufbauen: C ist der Abschluß der Menge aller cotorsionsfreien Gruppen \(\leq 2^{\aleph_ 0}\) unter Untergruppenbildung und der Bildung kartesischer Produkte \(\prod_{i\in I}A_ i/F\) modulo \((2^{\aleph_ 0})^+\)-vollständigen Filtern F auf I.
