Let G be a connected open set in the complex plane, and fix a distinguished point \(z_ 0\in G\). The Bergman space B(G) is the set of analytic functions f on G such that the integral of \(| f|^ 2\) on G (with respect to area measure) is finite. The Dirichlet space D(G) is the set of analytic functions f on G such that f'\(\in B(G).\) This paper proves the following results: If G is bounded and starlike, then D(G) is contained in B(G). If G is a bounded simply connected domain and \(\phi\) is a Riemann map of the unit disk onto G and \(\phi\) ' is in the Hardy space \(H^ p\) for some \(p>1\), then D(G) is containd in B(G). For \(p=1\), the previous result is false, because the paper constructs a Jordan domain G with a rectifiable boundary such that D(G) is not contained in B(G).
