Probably the most interesting open problem in the theory of generalized metric spaces is the question whether every stratifiable space is an \(M_ 1\)-space. Consider the following conditions on a topological space X: (i) X is a stratifiable space which can be embedded into a countable product of paracompact \(\sigma\)-metrizable spaces; (ii) X is a stratifiable space with an M-structure; (iii) X is a strongly regularly stratifiable space; (iv) X is a regularly stratifiable space; (v) X is an \(M_ 1\)-space; (vi) X is stratifiable. By the recent work of \textit{T. Mizokami} [Topology Appl. 17, 63-89 (1984; Zbl 0536.54017)] and \textit{K. Tamano} [Topology Appl. 16, 287-301 (1983; Zbl 0525.54020)] the following implications are known: \[ (i)\Rightarrow (ii)\Rightarrow (v)\Rightarrow (vi)\quad and\quad (i)\Rightarrow (iii)\Rightarrow (iv)\Rightarrow (v)\Rightarrow (vi). \] In the present paper it is shown that conditions (i) - (iv) are, in fact, equivalent. Thus, if every stratifiable space could be embedded into a countable product of paracompact \(\sigma\)- metrizable spaces, the above problem would be solved.
