The need for fully automatic finite element mesh generators capable of dealing with general geometries and mesh gradations is discussed. A specific approach to fully automatic two- and three-dimensional mesh generation that meets these needs for meshes with bounded h-type of mesh refinements is presented. These procedures, based on hierarchic spatial decompositions, allow for efficient a priori and a posteriori mesh refinements. An approach capable of producing coarse meshes with the unbounded exponential mesh gradations as desired for optional h-p refinements is also outlined.
