A short and simple proof of the following known theorem is given: Let X be a simply connected mod p H-space (p-odd) whose mod p cohomology is a polynomial algebra. Then all the polynomial generators have degree 2. The proof uses Adams and Wilkerson's algebraic closure arguments and elementary Hopf algebra considerations.
