Motivated by the known fact that the orthogonal and symplectic finite dimensional Lie algebras can be realized as the span of certain second degree elements in Clifford or Weyl algebras resp., the authors give an analogous construction of the classical (infinite series of) affine Lie algebras. They introduce several generalisations of Clifford and Weyl algebras and identify certain subspaces with the classical affine Lie algebras. The corresponding representations are shown to be irreducible or to decompose into two irreducible subrepresentations and the highest weights as well as the homogeneous characters are determined.
