A ring is pythagorean if every sum of squares is a square. The rings considered in this paper are real one-dimensional noetherian local domains with residue field k, k a real closed field, having a certain approximation property. These rings are called real AP-curves. If A is a real AP-curve and \(\bar A\) is its integral closure then \(\bar A\) is a discrete valuation ring. Let v be the corresponding valuation. \(\Gamma =v(A\setminus \{0\})\) is the value semigroup of A. Fixing a value semigroup \(\Gamma\) both the cases that every real AP-curve with value semigroup \(\Gamma\) is pythagorean or that no real AP-curve with value semigroup \(\Gamma\) is pythagorean are characterized in terms of \(\Gamma\).
