The authors have established a connection between the existence of a solution and its numerical approximation. The method used here is based on the existence of an approximating flow satisfying the Kutta-Joukowski condition which is obtained as a consequence of a more general regularity result. The variational techniques are useful in prescribing the circulation a priori and to compute the flow as the limit of a regular sequence so as to avoid numerical difficulties caused by the existence of a singularity at the leading edge. The results are concerned with subcritical stationary plane flows of a compressible inviscid fluid past a profile with a sharp trailing edge.
