The role of almost optimal decompositions in the construction of weak type spaces is studied. A result by Herz is shown to imply interpolation results for weak-type spaces; identities relating the derivatives of the K-functional and the E-functional are derived and, as a consequence, two known approaches to weak-type interpolation are shown to coincide; finally, the result of Herz is put in an abstract setting and related to certain inequalities between the K and J-functionals, fundamental in extrapolation theory.
