For each integer \(n>0\) and each \(f\in L\) 1[0,1] let \(S_ n(f,0)\) represent the nth partial sum of the Walsh-Fourier series of f evaluated at 0. The author obtains estimates on the size of \(S_{n_ k}(f,0)\) for \(f\in L^{\infty}[0,1]\) or ``continuous on the group'', when \(\{n_ k\}\) is an increasing convex sequence of positive integers which satisfies \(\limsup_{k\to \infty}\log (n_ k)/\sqrt{k}<\infty\) or when \(\{n_ k\}\) is lacunary (especially, \(n_ k\equiv 2\) k). He uses these estimates to characterize the growth of \(S_{n_ k}(f,0)\) in several cases. For example, let \(c_ 0=\{\{a_ k\}:a_ k=o(1)\) as \(k\to \infty \}\) and \(\sigma_ 0=\{\{a_ k\}:\sum^{m}_{k=1}a\) \(2_ k=o(m\) 2) as \(m\to \infty \}\). Let \(\mu_ k=2\quad k+2^{k-2}+2^{k- 4}+...+2^{\alpha_ 0}\) where \(\alpha_ 0=k-2[k/2]\). Then \(\{a_ k\}\in c_ 0\) if and only if there is a function f continuous on the group with \(f(0)=0\) such that \(a_ k=S_{2\quad k}(f,0)\) for \(k=1,2,..\). And \(\{a_ k\}\in \sigma_ 0\) if and only if there is a function f continuous on the group with \(f(0)=0\) such that \(a_ k=S_{\mu_ k}(f,0)\) for \(k=1,2,... \). [There is a misprint in the statement of Theorem 3. The characterization of \(\sigma\) uses \(\mu_ k\) not \(n_ k\) (see the proof on p 56).]
