A strange adding machine is a non-renormalizable unimodal map \(f\) with critical point \(c\), such that \(f_{|\omega (c)}\) is topologically conjugate to an adding machine map. The main results of the paper are theorems, which specify the requirements for a kneading sequence to be that of a strange adding machine. From this characterization one can both construct kneading sequences of strange adding machines and analyze existing sequences to determine if they are in fact strange adding machines.
