No satisfactory theory of the propagation of sound through the pulmonary parenchyma has yet been published. In the present study a theory of sound in the pulmonary parenchyma is constructed on the basis of a previously proposed model of the dynamics of the parenchyma treated as a multiphase continuum. We consider the effect of a nonideal parenchyma - resistance of the respiratory pathways and viscosity of the parenchyma - on the speed and damping of sound in the lungs.
