This masterly review considers structured shock waves in thermoelastic materials. After the introduction and notation sections it is organized into four main parts: (i) thermoelastic materials and the speeds of sound, (ii) departures, arrivals, and the structure of the Hugoniot, (iii) A priori inequalities and (iv) blocked Rayleigh curves, bifurcated Hugoniots, and the curve of thermal extremes. The exposition is both detailed and clear and the paper will form a valuable reference work in the topic for some time to come.
