By analogy with the sequence space \(\ell_ p\) \((p>0)\), the concept of \(\hat\ell_ p\) was first introduced in [the authors, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 283, 729-739 (1984; Zbl 0546.46004)]. In this paper the authors present certain negative results for \(\hat\ell_ p\). As a sample: for \(1<p<\infty\), the spaces \(\hat\ell_ p\) and \(\widehat{\hat\ell_ p}\) are not separable (so, in particular, are not Hilbert spaces).
