The problem of making inference about the initial relative infection rate of a disease, which is only transmitted by contact between males and females, is considered. A model studied by \textit{N. T. J. Bailey} [The mathematical theory of infectious diseases and its applications (1975; Zbl 0334.92024)] is extended and analysed by martingale based techniques in the spirit of \textit{O. Aalen} [Ann. Stat. 6, 701-726 (1978; Zbl 0389.62025)]. A simulation study compares two competing estimators.
