    By using a refinement of the arithmetic mean-geometric mean inequality due to R. Rado the author obtains the following sharpening of Carleman's inequality: \[ (1/e) \sum_{k=1}^\infty G_k+ \sum_{k=1}^\infty (M_k-m_k)^2/ k(k+1)< \sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k, \] where \(a_k\) are positive real numbers such that \(\sum_{k=1}^\infty a_k\) is convergent, \(G_k= (a_1\dots a_k)^{1/k}\), \(M_k^2= \max\{ia_i: 1\leq i\leq k\}\) and \(m_k^2= \min\{ia_i: 1\leq i\leq k\}\).
