The authors prove the following theorems: 1. Every set of \(n\) integers contains a subset of size \(\Omega (n^{ {1}\over {6}})\) in which no element is the average of two or more others. 2. For every \(\varepsilon >0\) and every \(m>m(\varepsilon)\), there are \(m\) sets of integers \(A_1, \ldots , A_m\) such that for all \(a_1\in A_1, \ldots , a_m\in A_m\), \(\{a_1, \ldots , a_m\}\) has no nonempty subset with sum \(=0\).
