\textit{R. Bellman} and \textit{M. Giertz} [Inf. Sci. 5, 149-156 (1973; Zbl 0251.02059)] have proposed conditions that the operations of union, intersection and complementation of fuzzy sets satisfy Zadeh's definitions, i.e. \(m_{A\cup B}(x)=\max\{m_A(x),m_B(x)\}\), \(m_{A\cap B}(x)=\min\{m_A(x),m_B(x)\}\) and \(m_{\overline A}(x)=1-m_A(x)\). Two years later, Fang and Fu found out that some of the Bellman-Giertz-conditions are not necessary. In the present paper, the authors present a modified Bellman-Giertz-Theorem w.r.t. union and intersection which consists of five necessary conditions. Examples show that at least four of them cannot be omitted.
