In this note the author considers the Cauchy problem in Gevrey classes for a third order hyperbolic equation the coefficients of which depend only on the time variable and are degenerate at the initial plane. He investigates the relation among the order of degeneration of coefficients and the index of Gevrey class in which the Cauchy problem is well posed.
