A smooth map between smooth manifolds is called a special generic map if it has only definite fold as its singularities. In this paper, the authors study special generic maps of 4-manifolds into \(\mathbb{R}^3\), which is a continuation of their previous studies. First, a complete list of those closed 4-manifolds with surface fundamental groups which admit special generic maps into \(\mathbb{R}^3\) is given. As an application, it is shown that there exist infinitely many pairs \((M,N)\) of smooth closed 4-manifolds with surface fundamental groups such that \(M\) and \(N\) are homeomorphic, \(M\) admits a special generic map into \(\mathbb{R}^3\), while \(N\) does not. The nonexistence of special generic maps on aspherical manifolds is also shown and a generalization in terms of Lyusternik-Shnirel'man \(\pi_1\)-category is obtained. Finally, by using these results, those compact complex analytic surfaces which, as \(C^\infty\) manifolds, admit special generic maps into \(\mathbb{R}^3\) are completely determined.
