Consider the boundary value problem (1) \({d^ 2u \over dx^ 2}+ \lambda u=uf(u)\), \(0<x<\pi\), \(u(0)=u(\pi)=0\), \(u(x) \neq 0\) for any \(x \in(0,\pi)\), where \(f\) is a Lipschitz continuous real function, defined on \(\mathbb{R}\). By a solution of (1) we mean a pair \((\lambda,u) \in \mathbb{R} \times C^ 2[0,\pi]\) satisfying (1). We define a set \(\Gamma\) by \(\Gamma:=\{(\lambda,h) \in \mathbb{R}^ 2\) / there exists a solution \((\lambda,u)\) of (1) satisfying \(u(\pi/2)=h\}\). The purpose of this paper is to determine a nonlinear term \(f\) from the solution set \(\Gamma\), considered to be a representation in \(\mathbb{R}^ 2\) of the solution set of (1).
