Let \(M\) be a surface in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\) whose mean curvature \(H\) and Gaussian curvature \(K\) satisfy an elliptic relation of the form \(H = f(H^ 2 - K)\), where \(f\) is a function defined on a connected interval containing zero. We call such an \(M\) a special surface when it satisfies height estimates (i.e. for a positive constant \(\lambda\) we have \(f \geq \lambda\) and \(f'(1 - 2ff') \geq 0\) on \(M\)). In this interesting paper the authors study special surfaces and prove among others that the annular ends are cylindrically bounded. Moreover, they study in great detail special surfaces \(M(\alpha,b)\) satisfying \(\alpha H + K = b\), where \(\alpha\), \(b\) are positive constants.
