    The crystal base on the modified quantized enveloping algebra \(\widetilde {U}_ q({\mathfrak g})\) was given by \textit{G. Lusztig} in [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 8177-8179 (1992; Zbl 0760.17011)]. The purpose of the paper under review is to study the structure of the crystal bases \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q ({\mathfrak g}))\) of \(\widetilde{U}_ q ({\mathfrak g})\), and to give an affirmative answer to some of Lusztig's conjectures. In [Duke Math. J. 69, 455-485 (1993)] the author introduced the ``dual algebra'' \(A_ q({\mathfrak g})\) of \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\) and its crystal base \(B(A_ q({\mathfrak g}))\). When \({\mathfrak g}\) is finite-dimensional, \(B(\widetilde{U}_ q({\mathfrak g}))\) is isomorphic to \(B(A_ q({\mathfrak g}))\). When \({\mathfrak g}\) is affine, \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q({\mathfrak g}))\) is the direct sum of \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q ({\mathfrak g}))_ +\), \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q ({\mathfrak g}))_ 0\) and \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q ({\mathfrak g}))_ -\). If we denote by \(B(0)\) the crystal base of the trivial representation, then \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q({\mathfrak g}))_ + \oplus B(0)\) is isomorphic to \(B(A_ q({\mathfrak g}))\). The author also shows that the Weyl group acts on \(B(\widetilde {U}_ q({\mathfrak g}))\) or, more generally, on the crystal base of the integrable \(U_ q({\mathfrak g})\)-module. In fact, the actions of simple reflections satisfy the braid relation.
