This paper is written in a reasonably ``user-friendly'' fashion, well organized, and well presented. Its aim is to find elegant combinatorial descriptions of weights of representations of classical groups. The emphasis on the elegance is part of the motivation for this work. The results are in some cases extensions and improvements of old results. New descriptions of orthogonal weights as well as weights for the ``odd symplectic'' case are obtained. The essential computations are done by formal manipulations and combinatorial arguments applied to determinantal expressions for characters.
